How to Keep Cool while Exercising Outdoors in Florida

Central Florida can get very hot during the summer months, with temperatures averaging 90 degrees. And with such high heat and humidity levels, a lot of residents struggle to keep their cool when exercising. This is why it’s imperative to be properly prepared for workout sessions to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion.

There are a number of illnesses associated with heat exhaustion, such as heat cramps, heat syncope and heatstroke. Some signs to look out for include dizziness, nausea, unusual heart rhythm, fatigue and irritability.

Here are some health and fitness tips to help you get that beach body safely:

  • –Stay out of direct sunlight. Run along shaded paths and wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect the face and neck.
  • –Take it easy and don’t do too much too soon. Over exerting yourself will tire you out and may result in you taking longer to recover.
  • –Hike, run or bike gradually. Increase the distance covered each time you head outdoors.
  • –Drink plenty of water before, during and after the workout routine.
  • –Exercise in early mornings and/or evenings, because it’s cooler. The hours between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. are the hottest time of the day.

Garden plots are filling fast and this is why we advise residents to make the most of limited space with the following gardening 101 tips:

  • –Interplant – Interplanting, otherwise known as intercropping, is an old-fashioned method for enhancing soil fertility and promoting plant cooperation.
  • –Succession – Following one plant with another is an effective way of maximizing a garden’s yield. There are various approaches, such as growing two crops simultaneously.
  • –Vertical – Grow as many fruits, vegetables and plants in your plot as possible by introducing trellising, hex wire netting or wooden pallets.
  • –Design – Think outside of the box by planning out a circle in the center of the plot. Allow 3-4 feet of room around the circle, so that you can properly read all areas of the garden.

Community gardens come standard at Altis at Sand Lake. To learn what else we have to offer at our luxury apartments in Orlando, be sure to contact us with your questions.
